Captain Alexander Purdy is the Assistant to the Director of Naval Intelligence, Foreign Division. Young Alexander Purdy joined the Royal Navy in 1891 and his rise among the ranks was a rapid one as he was promoted to Lieutenant in 1896, to commander in 1899, and Captain in 1905.

During the Russo-Japanese War, Purdy was a military observer stationed on the Imperial Japanese Navy cruiser Azuma, and was present at the Battle of Tsushima. After the war, he remained as a military attaché in Tokyo.

In 1913 he returned to London and became a staff office in Naval Intelligence.

With the outbreak of war in 1914 he became the Assistant to the Director of Naval Intelligence, Foreign Division.
