Before the war, Zoltán had been shoemaker, but as the world conflict continued the British blockade began to take it’s toll on various economies. In response a new and doubtful trade developed: smuggling. Though local police and customs offices were reinforced and the authorities took efforts to get this state of affairs under control, smuggling reached such a scale, that many people neglected even their jobs and lived from smuggling.
With Romania remaining neutral, there was, just across the border a wealth of commodities desirous of Black Market operators. Zoltán is but one of many smugglers moving back and forth across the Hungarian and Romanian border.
